The Erie Metro Federal Credit Union was founded in 1976 by its original owners, all of whom were employed at the Bethlehem Steel Corporation in Lackawanna, NY. Back then, the credit union was known as the “Steel 76 Federal Credit Union†however in June, 1984, the name was changed to the present name to more accurately reflect our diversified membership groups.
In March, 2005, the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) approved Erie Metro’s request to convert to a community charter. The charter allows the credit union to serve all persons who live, work, worship or attend school in the communities of South Buffalo, Lackawanna, Blasdell and Hamburg, NY.
At the present time, the credit union has over 4200 members. As of 12/31/06, Erie Metro’s asset size was approximately $12.18 million dollars. NCUA summarized the credit union’s financial net worth position as “Well Capitalizedâ€.
